What are the differences between Gluten Intolerance and Coeliac disease?

I am catering for an ever increasing number of clients with allergies and dietary needs.
I want to highlight the differences between Gluten Intolerance and Coeliac disease.

What is a Gluten Intolerance?

Gluten intolerance is a sensitivity to products containing gluten (wheat, barley and rye), which does require a careful diet, but they may still be able to tolerate some gluten based products.

What is Coeliac Disease?

Coeliac disease is an auto immune disease, when products containing gluten are eaten, this causes the immune system to go into overdrive, attacking healthy body tissues and causes damage to the gut. This in turn can cause all sorts of side effects and other health issues.

Did you know that Coeliac disease is considered a genetic condition, you are at much higher risk if a parent or sibling has it. Interestingly there are 2-3 times more women to men diagnosed with coeliac.

It’s unbelievable that less than a quarter of people with coeliac have been clinically diagnosed and the average length of time to diagnose is 13 YEARS!! This is truly shocking, so many are misdiagnosed with IBS.

I like to ensure that everyone is catered for at my events and has the same dining experience. The picture today is of a savoury platter for 2 people, suitable for coeliacs and those following a gluten free diet.
